1-Benzyl-5-nitro-1H-imidazole-4-carboxylic acid is an inhibitor of xanthine dehydrogenase. It has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of xanthine oxidase and has a planar ring system. This compound can be used in the synthesis of analogues with similar inhibitory properties. 1-Benzyl-5-nitro-1H-imidazole-4-carboxylic acid has been shown to be active against azepinomycin, which is an antibiotic that inhibits bacterial growth by interfering with ribosomal protein synthesis. The biochemical studies of this compound have shown that it inhibits xanthine dehydrogenase, a key enzyme in purine metabolism, and may also have antibacterial effects.
