Przewalskin is a synthetic, natural product that has been shown to have cytotoxic and antiviral activity. It has been used in vitro to inhibit the growth of various cancer cell lines, including human cervical carcinoma, but not leukemia cells. Przewalskin is also active against the Epstein-Barr virus and the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). The mechanism of action for Przewalskin is unknown. However, it has been suggested that it may act by enhancing the production of free radicals in cells or by inhibiting an enzyme that protects cells from free radical damage.
Przewalskin can be synthesized from salvianolic acid B or protocatechuic acid via a series of chemical reactions.
