N,N-Dimethylsphingosine (DMS) is a lipid molecule that belongs to the group of neurotrophic factors. It has been shown to induce cell death in human leukemia cells HL-60 by decreasing mitochondrial membrane potential and increasing apoptosis pathway. DMS also inhibits the proliferation of cancer tissues by inhibiting signal pathways involved in cell growth. DMS binds to the ryanodine receptor, which is a protein found on the surface of cells that regulates calcium channels. The polymerase chain reaction technique has confirmed that DMS is involved in gene transcription and replication. In addition, DMS has been shown to have inhibitory properties against coumarin derivatives and other kinases.
