It binds to the nicotinic cholinergic receptors and has been shown to induce neuronal apoptosis in vitro. BPAN also inhibits the activity of histone deacetylase, which is involved in the regulation of gene expression and cellular proliferation. BPAN's anti-proliferative effects are thought to be due to its ability to inhibit the transcriptional activity of histones.
