- Taxuspin X
Taxol is a naturally occurring plant product that has been used in cancer treatment. It is a cytotoxic agent that inhibits the growth of cells by binding to microtubules and stabilizing them, preventing cells from dividing. Taxol also prevents the production of proteins needed for cell division and stops cell cycle progression at the G2 phase. Taxol is derived from the Pacific yew tree (Taxus cuspidata) and the American yew tree (Sciadopitys verticillata). The chemical structure of taxol was determined using x-ray diffraction data collected on taxanes extracted from these plants. The drug can be synthesized by starting with 10-deacetylbaccatin III as a precursor, then adding one molecule of baccatin III to produce 10-deacetyltaxol. This synthesis can be done in an asymmetric manner, which allows for the production of a right-handed or left-handed form of taxol. Molecular
