Venlafaxine is a serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor with antidepressant properties. Venlafaxine-d6 N-oxide is the oxidized form of venlafaxine and can be used to study the metabolism of venlafaxine in humans. Venlafaxine-d6 N-oxide is an active metabolite of venlafaxine that is formed by oxidation of the drug by cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes. It has been shown to be an effective substrate for wastewater treatment, as it undergoes mineralization and biodegradation. The activated form of venlafaxine-d6 N-oxide can be used as a tracer compound to measure the uptake of xenobiotics in wastewater treatment systems.
