2-Boc-2,7-diazaspiro[4.4]nonane-6-one is a tertiary amine that has three hydrogen bonds to the carbonyl group and one to the nitrogen atom in the 2 position of the pyran ring. The compound exists as two conformations: one with a chair conformation and another with a boat conformation. In each case, the tertiary amine hydrogen bonds to the carbonyl carbon atom. The chair conformation is favored because it has less steric strain on the tertiary amine nitrogen atom than does the boat conformation.
