Gatifloxacin related compound E (GFX-E) is a hypoglycemic agent that inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to 16S ribosomal RNA and inhibiting protein synthesis. It has been shown to be effective against methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Clostridium perfringens, although is not active against acid-fast bacteria such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis or Mycobacterium avium complex. Gatifloxacin related compound E has shown anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis. Gatifloxacin related compound E also has an antimicrobial effect on some strains of Candida albicans and other fungi. GFX-E has been shown to reduce blood glucose levels in healthy mice by increasing the sensitivity of insulin receptors.
