Description:Ethyl 2-amino-2-phenylpropanoate is a configurationally stable amino acid that can be synthesized from styrene. It is an optically active compound and can be used as a hydrogenation catalyst for the hydrogenolysis of benzyl alcohols to benzyl amines. This compound has been shown to have an affinity for transition metal surfaces, such as Raney nickel, which leads to a high rate of reaction with benzyl alcohols. Ethyl 2-amino-2-phenylpropanoate is also capable of catalyzing the synthesis of benzylamine derivatives from benzaldehyde in the presence of amines. The catalytic activity of this molecule is enhanced by the presence of raney nickel.
