Encecalin is a sesquiterpene lactone that has inhibitory properties on plant metabolism. It is found in the acetate extract from the roots of Encephalartos natalensis that are used for medicinal purposes. Encecalin has shown to have clinical benefits for the treatment of symptoms associated with inflammation and pain in animal models. In addition, it has anti-inflammatory properties and can be used as an anti-inflammatory agent. The mechanism of action of encecalin is not well understood. One hypothesis is that it inhibits fatty acid synthesis by binding to the enzyme acyl coenzyme A synthase 2 (ACS2). This binding prevents the formation of an enzyme-acyl coenzyme A complex, which would be required for fatty acid synthesis and subsequent cell division.
