It belongs to the group of amines and has a molecular weight of 144.07 g/mol. 2-Aminobenzene-1,4-diol can be synthesized by nitration of benzene followed by reduction with sodium hydroxide or hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst. The compound is soluble in water, ethanol, ether, acetone, chloroform and benzene. It reacts with inorganic acids to give salts and with chlorine gas to give 2-chloroamino benzenesulfonic acid (CAS# 690-52-8). The compound also reacts with supercritical carbon dioxide to produce 1-(2'-aminobenzoyl)benzene (CAS# 57714-71-2).
