It is also known as succinic or malic acid, and it is a natural metabolite of glucose. 2-Hydroxy-3-propylbutanedioic acid is converted to succinic acid by the enzyme succinic dehydrogenase. Succinic acid can be converted to malic acid by the enzyme malate dehydrogenase.
