D-Penicillamine disulfide is an anionic, water-soluble compound that is used in the treatment of various diseases. It is a reactive, sulfhydryl group-containing compound that reacts with amines to form a stable covalent bond. The reaction of D-penicillamine disulfide with amines can be detected using an electrochemical detector and it has been shown to be useful for the diagnosis of squamous carcinoma. D-Penicillamine disulfide also inhibits the production of inflammatory substances such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes by inhibiting the enzyme cyclooxygenase. In addition, penicillin has been shown to have some effect in treating infectious diseases such as syphilis, gonorrhea, and pneumonia.
