Methyl 4-bromo-3-hydroxythiophene-2-carboxylate is a prodrug that is metabolized in vivo to produce the active form, 4-bromo-3-(3,5-dichloropyridin-2-yl)thiophene. This compound belongs to the class of thiourea compounds and inhibits cancer cell growth by inhibiting the phosphatase PTP1B. Methyl 4-bromo-3-(3,5-dichloropyridin-2-yl)thiophene has potent inhibitory activity against multikinase and potent inhibitory activity against ptp1b. It has been shown to have anticancer activity in vitro.
