Sophocarpine is a major alkaloid found in Sophora alopecuroides L. and is used to treat colitis, including ulcerative colitis, which is characterized by inflammation of the inner lining of the colon. It has been shown to inhibit IL-10 production in a murine model of colitis. Sophocarpine has also been shown to inhibit bile acid-induced oxidative stress and damage in rat ileum, as well as dextran sulfate-induced barrier dysfunction in rat colonic epithelial cells. This compound also shows an activity index for its anti-inflammatory properties that is higher than that of prednisolone or hydrocortisone. The oral LD50 for sophocarpine monohydrate in rats is greater than 2000 mg/kg. Toxicities include diarrhea, vomiting, and convulsions.
