Description:

RuCl(p-cymene)((R)-binap) is a catalyst that is used in organic synthesis. It can be immobilized on various solid supports and has been shown to be more selective than other Ru catalysts. The reaction system was studied using liquid phase hydrogenation of pyridones with RuCl(p-cymene)((R)-binap). Kinetic data for the hydrogenations were obtained, including the kinetic constants for hydrogenation of pyridones by RuCl(p-cymene)((R)-binap). Hydrogenations of a series of functional groups with this catalyst were studied, revealing that it is stereoselective and can selectively hydrogenate one functional group over another. Impurities found in the product are discussed.
