Curlignan is a natural product that has been isolated from the roots of Muscari altissima. Curlignan is an apoptosis inducer and antioxidant, which may be due to its ability to inhibit oxidative stress. Curlignan has been shown to selectively induce apoptosis in hepatoma cells and to have a protective effect on muscari-treated hepatoma cells. Curlignan also inhibits cancer cell proliferation and induces staining in carcinoma cells. The mechanism of action is thought to be related to its ability to induce the expression of caspase-3 and proapoptotic proteins Bax and Bak.
