2-Methyl-5-hydroxytryptamine hydrochloride is a paracrine hormone that belongs to the group of serotonin and is known to be involved in many physiological processes. It has been shown to increase intestinal motility in rats, as well as being able to induce cystometrogram contractions. This drug also has been shown to have an effect on male sexual function, and can cause hyperactivity in some individuals. The effects of 2-methyl-5-hydroxytryptamine hydrochloride are mediated by 5HT1A and 5HT2 receptors, which are located on the bladder and glioma cells respectively. The biosynthesis of 2-methyl-5-hydroxytryptamine hydrochloride involves the hydroxylation of 5-hydroxytryptophan with subsequent decarboxylation.
