It is used as a plasticizer in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and other plastics, as well as an additive to cosmetics such as nail polish. Bis(trans-3,3,5-trimethylcyclohexyl) phthalate has been shown to crystallize thermally and will react with water or alcohols. This compound is heat sensitive and can undergo thermal degradation, forming hazardous byproducts. Bis(trans-3,3,5-trimethylcyclohexyl) phthalate is a stereoisomer of bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP).
