Description:2-Acetamido-2-deoxy-beta-D-glucopyranosyl amine (A2DG) is a diagnostic marker for juvenile idiopathic polyarteritis nodosa. This molecule is an intermediate in the synthesis of the carbohydrate, heparin. The A2DG assay measures concentrations of this metabolite in plasma samples and can be used to diagnose vasculitis and other inflammatory diseases. Novartis has developed a metabolite profiling technique that uses mass spectrometry to identify molecules present in cell culture or plasma samples. This technique has been used to measure levels of A2DG metabolites in patients with vasculitis, including juvenile idiopathic polyarteritis nodosa.
