Description:

cis-8,11,14-Eicosatrienoic acid methyl ester is a methyl ester of cis-8,11,14-eicosatrienoic acid. It is used as an additive to biodiesel in order to optimize the properties of the fuel and reduce environmental pollution. Cis-8,11,14-Eicosatrienoic acid methyl ester can be produced by treating pentadecanoate with methanol and sulfur trioxide gas. The process converts pentadecanoate into a mixture of methyl myristate and methyl palmitate which are then reacted with formaldehyde to produce cis-8,11,14-eicosatrienoic acid methyl ester. This process has been shown to be successful when used on cyanobacteria from water surfaces.
