Taxiphyllin is a natural antibiotic that was originally isolated from the leaves of Taxus brevifolia. It has been shown to have antiparasitic, antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties and is used as a chemotherapy drug for leukemia, lymphoma and other cancers. Taxiphyllin inhibits cell growth by binding to DNA-dependent RNA polymerase, thereby preventing transcription and replication. It also binds to bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA, which prevents protein synthesis by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division. Taxiphyllin can inhibit HIV-1 replication in vitro and in vivo
