Aureonitol is a natural product found in the leaves of the plant Eupatorium rugosum. It has been used as an antibiotic, antiparasitic, and antiviral agent for many years. Aureonitol is most effective against bacteria and fungi that are sensitive to it. It inhibits protein synthesis in microorganisms by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, preventing the formation of an inhibitory complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis. Aureonitol also has antifungal and antibacterial properties due to its ability to inhibit protein synthesis.
