This is a novel, selective and efficient catalyst for the synthesis of oxiranes from aldehydes and azides. It has been found to be more chemoselective than other catalysts in this area, and can also be used as a catalyst for the synthesis of vicinal silylated oxirane. The catalyst is prepared by reacting an amine with an aldehyde in the presence of hydroxide.
