3-Bromo-4,5-dimethylphenol is a bromination product of the structurally related compound 4,5-dimethylphenol. The electrophilic character of 3-bromo-4,5-dimethylphenol is due to the bromine atom. It can be used as an intermediate for the synthesis of other chemicals. Bromination of 4,5-dimethylphenol takes place in two steps: first a nucleophilic attack by bromide ion on one of the carbon atoms in 4,5-dimethylphenol and then an electrophilic substitution reaction between the bromine atom and one of the hydroxyl groups. In step 1, the nucleophile bromide ion attacks one of the carbons in 4,5-dimethylphenol.
