1-Benzyl-4-(hydroxymethyl)pyrrolidin-2-one is an experimental analgesic drug. It is a prodrug that undergoes several metabolic transformations, including oxidation, hydroxylation, and reduction to form the active metabolite 1-benzylpyrrolidin-2(3H)-one. This compound has been shown to have potent antihypertensive effects in animals as well as antidepressant activity. The optical isomer of this compound has also been shown to have anticonvulsant effects in animals.
