Description:2-(Hydroxymethyl)phenyl acetate is a compound that is obtained from the oxidation of phenol. It has shown to be effective in removing adsorbed and lipase-oxidized compounds from celite. 2-(Hydroxymethyl)phenyl acetate is stable in the presence of hydrogen peroxide and ozone. Its selectivity for oxidizing aliphatic over aromatic hydrocarbons is due to its ability to abstract an H atom from the methyl group, which increases its reactivity. The rate of oxidation can be increased by catalyzing with a diacetate or sulfuric acid. 2-(Hydroxymethyl)phenyl acetate is most commonly used as a catalyst in kinetic studies of acetylation reactions, such as those catalyzed by acetic anhydride, benzoyl chloride, or sulfuric acid.
