The stereoisomers of this compound are used as precursors for the synthesis of ammonium nitrate, which is used as a fertilizer and explosive. 2-Bromo-3-hydroxy-benzaldehyde is also used in organic synthesis as a precursor for acetylation or halide reactions with palladium complexes or halides.
