(2S,3R)-2-Amino-3-octadecanol is a fatty acid that has been shown to induce autophagy in cell models. Autophagy is a process by which cells degrade their own components to generate energy and prevent the accumulation of cellular damage. It is induced by starvation, growth factor deprivation, or treatment with rapamycin. This compound has also been shown to decrease the levels of insulin in diabetic patients and may be a potential treatment for diabetic neuropathy. The synthesis of this compound was asymmetric and its biological activity was only seen when it was present on one side of the molecule. The biological relevance of this compound as an autophagy inducer has been confirmed in two model systems: DU145 human prostate cancer cells and L1210 murine leukemia cells.
