XAP044 is a mGlu7 antagonist that blocks the binding of glutamate to the mGlu7 receptor, which is a drug target for depression and pain control. It has been shown to have antidepressant activity in animal models by increasing serotonin and dopamine levels in the brain. XAP044 has also shown analgesic effects in animal models of acute and chronic pain. XAP044 has been shown to be well-tolerated and efficacious in preclinical studies, with no observed adverse effects on locomotor or exploratory activity or anxiety-related behaviours.
