Description:(R)-2,4,6-Trimethylbenzenesulfinamide is a sulfonamide drug that is structurally related to the sulfa drugs. It is an asymmetric synthesis of the drug sulfanilamide. The compound was synthesized by recrystallization and it shows high activity against bacteria that are resistant to other antibiotics. (R)-2,4,6-Trimethylbenzenesulfinamide interacts with the active site of bacterial enoyl reductase enzyme and blocks its ability to carry out its function. This leads to inhibition of protein synthesis in the bacteria, which causes cell death. (R)-2,4,6-Trimethylbenzenesulfinamide also has anti-inflammatory properties as it inhibits prostaglandins from being produced by inhibiting amines in phospholipases A2.
