Description:BDE No 205 is a diphenyl ether that is used as an additive for plastics, such as polystyrene and polyvinyl chloride. It is also used in the production of pesticides, dyes, and other organic chemicals. BDE No 205 has been found to be a potential human carcinogen. The chemical undergoes debromination in the environment and can be taken up by living organisms through inhalation or ingestion of contaminated food or water. BDE-205 binds to human serum albumin and accumulates in the liver cells, where it causes DNA damage and cell death. The median concentration of BDE-205 was found to be 3 ng/g dry weight in liver cells from humans who died with no known cause of death.
