Angolensin is an antimicrobial agent that has been used in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of prostate cancer cells by blocking the production of a-ring and beta-sheet protein, which are necessary for cell division. Angolensin also inhibits protein synthesis and bacterial growth. Angolensin is not active against gram positive bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pneumoniae, but it does have antibacterial activity against gram negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli or Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The mechanism of action for this drug involves the inhibition of bacterial ribonucleotide reductase, which is an enzyme that synthesizes ribonucleotides from deoxyribonucleotides. This enzyme plays a major role in bacterial DNA replication and repair. Symptoms of angolensin poisoning include diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea and abdominal pain.
