Anthothecol is a natural compound that belongs to the class of enzyme inhibitors. It is an inhibitor of the mitochondrial respiratory chain complex I, which is responsible for oxidative phosphorylation. Anthothecol has been shown to have a significant effect on the mouse hippocampus and is also active against cancer. Anthothecol has been shown to have antioxidant properties and can be used as a treatment for autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis or psoriasis. The bioavailability of anthothecol is low because it has a hydroxyl group and it's not water soluble. This compound could be developed as an oral medication that would inhibit the production of reactive oxygen species in cells by inhibiting mitochondrial complex I, thereby preventing oxidative injury.
