Asebotin is a natural phenolic compound and it has been shown to be cytotoxic against human cervical cancer cells. It inhibits the RNA polymerase activity of viruses and is active against HIV-1, HIV-2, and SIV. Asebotin also inhibits the synthesis of p-hydroxybenzoic acid from protocatechuic acid, which is involved in the synthesis of polyphenols. This compound has been used as a reference material for analytical chemistry due to its stability, solubility, and lack of interference in biological assays. Asebotin has also been shown to have significant cytotoxicity against autoimmune diseases in mice.
