Apocarotenal is a chemical compound that belongs to the class of carotenoids and has been shown to have a wide range of biological activities. It has been shown to be an inhibitor of mitochondrial complex I, which is located in the inner membrane of the mitochondria and catalyzes the oxidation of NADH or succinate. Apocarotenal binds to iron in a 1:1 ratio, which may be responsible for its ability to inhibit mitochondrial complex I by binding to it. Apocarotenal also has been shown to bind monoclonal antibodies, which may be a useful tool for detecting this molecule in vivo.
Apocarotenal inhibits liver cells and k562 cells by binding cytochrome P450 enzymes and blocking electron transport chain activity, leading to cell death. The reaction mechanism is similar to that of other inhibitors such as rotenone and paraquat. Apocarotenal has been used along with other
