Asatone is a pro-apoptotic protein that is isolated from the Chinese herb, Asatrofoetida. It is an anti-inflammatory agent with chemotherapeutic treatment potential for urothelial carcinoma and other carcinomas. Asatone induces apoptosis in prostate cancer cells by increasing mitochondrial membrane potential and decreasing the levels of reactive oxygen species. It also inhibits autophagy in these cells. Asatone has been shown to inhibit tumor growth in mice with prostate cancer by inducing cell cycle arrest and apoptosis as well as by inhibiting angiogenesis. This drug also has a significant effect on toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), which plays an important role in inflammation and cancer progression.
