Leptomerine is a cholinesterase inhibitor that has been shown to have inhibitory properties against the enzymes cholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase. Leptomerine inhibits acetylcholine esterase, which is an enzyme that degrades acetylcholine, by binding to its active site and preventing the breakdown of acetylcholine. Leptomerine has been used in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease and other neurological disorders. The mechanistic effects of leptomerine are still unclear, although it has been shown to be effective on marine organisms as well as mammals.
