5-Phenoxyamyl Bromide is a primary amino compound that is used as an intermediate in the production of diphenoxy. The compound can be prepared by reacting phenol with bromine, followed by hydrolysis with sodium carbonate and nitric acid. This reaction produces 5-phenoxyamyl chloride and hydrochloric acid as a byproduct. The desired product, 5-phenoxyamyl bromide, can be obtained by refluxing the chloride with pentane and aluminium. This reaction results in the loss of chlorine atoms and formation of nitrogen atoms. The final step in producing diphenoxy involves reacting the 5-phenoxyamyl bromide with calcium carbonate to yield diphenoxy.
