Product Information
Adamantane is a saturated hydrocarbon with the formula C10H16. It is a colorless, odorless, crystalline solid at room temperature. Adamantane is insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents. The compound has been isolated from natural gas and coal tar. Adamantane can be prepared by nitration of ethylbenzene followed by hydrogenation of the nitro compound. Adamantane reacts readily with oxygen, ozone, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and halogens to form oxides and other compounds. Irradiation with ultraviolet light results in crosslinking between adamantane molecules to form polyadamantanes. Unsaturated alkyl groups react with adamantane to give c1-6 alkyldiamantanes (e.g., 1-pentyladamantan-1-amine). Hydroxylamine converts adamantane into N-1-Adamantyladamantan-1-amine hydrochloride (AD
