Bryacarpene-1 is a 2-d nmr and x-ray crystallography that is oxidised, cationic and has a molecular weight of 314. Bryacarpene-1 is found in the heartwood of bryaquine trees. It contains three quinones, which contain an ether linkage to the pterocarpan moiety. Bryacarpene-1 has been shown to scavenge free radicals, with the potential to be used as a prophylactic against cancer. It also exhibits anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis, which may be due to its ability to inhibit lipoxygenase activity. Bryacarpene-1 also inhibits the production of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) and serum enzymes such as dismutase activity in mice with lung cancer.
