Cajanol is a bioactive substance that has been shown to have anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties. It inhibits the growth of cancer cells by inducing apoptosis, which is due to the activation of caspase-9 and caspase-3. Cajanol also inhibits the production of fatty acids in mitochondria, which leads to a decrease in mitochondrial membrane potential. This can cause an increase in hepcidin levels and reduce iron absorption from the gut. Cajanol also stimulates phytoalexin production in plants, which provides protection against fungal and bacterial infections. The mechanism by which cajanol induces apoptosis is not yet clear but may be due to its ability to inhibit cytochrome P450 enzymes involved with the synthesis of prostaglandins or its ability to inhibit tumor necrosis factor (TNF) receptor 1 signaling pathways.
