2-(5-Chloro-2-nitrophenyl)acetonitrile is a n-oxide and carbanion that has been used as a model for the study of acrylonitrile. 2-(5-Chloro-2-nitrophenyl)acetonitrile can be synthesized by nitrating aniline with nitric acid, followed by oxidation with potassium permanganate. The resulting product is then reacted with acrylonitrile in the presence of an acid to form 2-(5-chloro-2-nitrophenyl)acrylonitrile. This compound is unstable and decomposes when it is heated to 150 degrees Celsius.
