Praeruptorin C is a glycol ester that stimulates the release of neurotrophic factors, such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). BDNF is important in the survival and maintenance of neurons. This compound also helps to prevent cardiac dysfunction by reducing Ca2+ overload. Praeruptorin C has been shown to protect against neurodegeneration in mouse models of Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease and Alzheimer's disease. The mechanism of action for this effect may be due to its ability to bind to the receptor activity for BDNF and other neurotrophins. In addition, praeruptorin C has been shown to have anti-oxidant properties, which may be due to its ability to scavenge free radicals and inhibit lipid peroxidation.
