Lycobetaine is a natural compound isolated from the marine sponge Lycocarpus edulis. It has shown to have antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal activities in vitro. Lycobetaine can inhibit mitochondrial membrane potential, which may be useful in treating viral infections and autoimmune diseases. It also inhibits acetylcholinesterase activity and has been shown to be effective against symptoms of Alzheimer's disease and other neurological disorders. Lycobetaine also exhibits water-permeability properties that may make it an effective drug for the treatment of infectious diseases.
