Specioside is a natural phenolic compound that has potent inducers of phase II enzymes. It also has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anticarcinogenic properties. Specioside has been shown to have inhibitory effects on the development of inflammatory bowel disease and bowel cancer. Specioside can be found in the bark of a tree called Costus erythroxylum, which is native to tropical Africa, Asia, and Central America. The bark extract contains protocatechuic acid (PCA) as well as other compounds such as catalposide (CPS), ajugol (AG), and rotarod (RT). These compounds have biological properties that are similar to specioside's.
