Product Information
- formamide, N-(2-furanylmethyl)-
- N-(2-Furylmethyl)formamide
N-[(Furan-2-yl)methyl]formamide is a methanofuran that is used as a source of carbon and energy for methanogenic organisms. It is formed by the oxidation of formaldehyde by the enzyme formaldehyde dehydrogenase. This compound is also used in the synthesis of other compounds, such as methylamine and formic acid. N-[(Furan-2-yl)methyl]formamide has been shown to be an intermediate in the formation of formylmethanofuran, which is an important metabolite in methanogenesis. The enzyme formyltransferase catalyzes the conversion of N-[(Furan-2-yl)methyl]formamide to furfurylamine. Methanobacterium thermoautotrophicum produces this compound from formaldehyde and hydrogen gas, which are then converted into methane and water through a series of reactions known as the Wood-Ljungdahl pathway.
