It is formed by the oxidation of formaldehyde by the enzyme formaldehyde dehydrogenase. This compound is also used in the synthesis of other compounds, such as methylamine and formic acid. N-[(Furan-2-yl)methyl]formamide has been shown to be an intermediate in the formation of formylmethanofuran, which is an important metabolite in methanogenesis. The enzyme formyltransferase catalyzes the conversion of N-[(Furan-2-yl)methyl]formamide to furfurylamine. Methanobacterium thermoautotrophicum produces this compound from formaldehyde and hydrogen gas, which are then converted into methane and water through a series of reactions known as the Wood-Ljungdahl pathway.
