3,6-Dihydroxyxanthone is a natural product that is used in tropical medicine. It is an inorganic acid with a chemical structure of three hydroxyl groups and six carbonyl groups. 3,6-Dihydroxyxanthone has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells in vitro by inhibiting protein synthesis and DNA synthesis. The mechanism of this inhibition is not yet clear but may be related to its ability to react with nitrogen atoms or its hydroxyl group, which are both found in proteins and DNA. 3,6-Dihydroxyxanthone also has anticancer effects by inducing apoptosis and cell cycle arrest. 3,6-Dihydroxyxanthone has been shown to have antimicrobial properties against Gram positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Clostridium perfringens.
