Description

1,8-Dimethoxyanthraquinone is a polynuclear compound that has red shift optical properties. It can be used as an antioxidant in foodstuffs and pharmaceuticals, and has been shown to have anticancer effects. This compound is synthesized from the sulfonation of anthraquinone, which forms methoxy groups with the aromatic ring. The functional groups are biphenyl-2-carboxylic acid and ethyl formate. 1,8-Dimethoxyanthraquinone is also known to lower the reactivity of other antioxidants such as butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), or 2-tertiary-butylphenol (TBPH).
