Eriobofuran is a biphenyl compound that has been shown to have antimicrobial properties. It inhibits the growth of certain types of bacteria by interfering with the synthesis of fatty acids in these cells. Eriobofuran is also an inhibitor of phytoalexin production in plants and can be used as a model system for studying the effects of this chemical on plant cells. Eriobofuran can be synthesized from trifluoroacetic acid and hydroxylated with potassium hydroxide. This chemical has an inhibitory effect on the growth of macrophage-like cells and can be used as a chromatographic method for identifying other compounds that inhibit cell growth.
